Rebolledo, who was born and raised in Xalapa, Mexico, started Djing in 2002 and became quickly one of the residents of the legendary “Santanera”, in Playa Del Carmen, at the mexican caribbean. There he developed his very own style of playing, mixing old and new odd dancetracks, driven by a persistent groove of disco.

Feeling the necessity of links between tracks he used to play in the club, he started developing his own rough and edgy rhythms. Matias Aguayo, whom he had played with several times at his night in the “Santanera” got interested in his material, helped him to develop it and to share it with people, who had a similar taste or motivation… later Rebolledo should become fundamental member of the label “Cómeme” , as a result of these friendships and efforts…[more]

Charles Trees – The Dream EP

I just recently ran across The Dream EP by Michigan Ann Arbor Charles Trees (released by the French label Musique Large as part of their Tour De Table series). Musically, Charles Trees, style on The Dream EP is in the same vain as some of the Brainfeeder artists (Flying Lotus, Ras G, FLYamSAM) mixed with some of the more R&B/Soul laden artists on Stones Throw such as Dam-Funk.

Or in the words of BLEEP:

Hallucinatory bump-soul-tronics….Trees is a Michigan producer with a clear love of psyched up R&B and slo-mo funk styles, rubbed up with the kind of schizoid beat patterns resonant of fellow Musique Large peoples, Debruit and Fulgeance.

Dadawah – Peace And Love

Recently reissued by the German label Dug Out (ran by one of the former owners of Honest Jon’s record shop in London) Dadawah’s Peace and Love blends Nyahbinghi drumming with a overtone of psychedelic guitars.

Below is a version of ‘Zion Land‘ which is included on the reissued copy of the album:

This was my first exposure to both Ras Michael (also known as Dadawah) and the reggae reissue label Dug Out; will not be my last.

Tame Impala ‘Solitude Is Bliss’

Tame Impala are a three piece psych rock band from Australia whose sound can be described, summed up in their own words, as:

The Tame Impala sound is one equally informed by The Beatles as it is beat poetry, by Turkish prog as it is by Turkish delight, and by English folk as much as homeless folk, and it’s a breathe of fresh air that reeks of all of these at times and none at others.

The band just recently released a new video for ‘Solitude Is Bliss’ from their upcoming album InnerSpeaker which is due to be released on Modular later this month:

“Tomokawa, the screaming philosopher.”

It was in the middle of the summer 2008, I received a long email from a Japanese �fan�. Looked like it was just some lovely words, advising me to film a Japanese musician, a certain rare folk artist named Tomokawa something. It took me 4 more months to re-read the email until the end � and discover that this fan was actually inviting me to Japan to make a movie about his idol.

We went there for 2 weeks, in March 2009, and this filming experience was by far the most important of my life. Kazuki Tomokawa, that’s his name, 59 years old man, at first the exact idea you could get of a cinema character straight from a yakuza movie, a guitar in his hand and a scream in his mouth. But then the camera allows you to explore more and makes you discover the multiple layers of his existence and belief in life, his past as an actor for Oshima or Miike, his passion for bike race gambling, his unstoppable addiction to alcohol, his amazing skills as a painter, and his troubled past with his son, you soon got the feeling there’s only one Kazuki Tomokawa. As there was only one Rimbaud.

The other day, while working on the edit of �La Faute des Fleurs�, a friend of mine was helping to translate certain sequences. At some point, she would suddenly burst into tears. At the question what happened, she turned to me and said, �it�s the way he speaks� he is like a poem�.
